    "Certain" social medias are filled with Gen-Zers. They don't understand that investment of materials makes all the difference. I think it's an after-effect of the early-2000 to late 2010s Copic 'If I get these Japanese markers my art will become amazing" craze on Deviantart and RUclips. Now that the magic has worn off, these disillusioned young artists are sour grapes over tried and true products. And I won't even get into the whole art supply hoarding problem that's taken over YT this last decade. Hours of swatching and making goo-goo eyes over all the colors give them the quick burst of dopamine when they can't/aren't willingly to put in the time or effort to actually create art themselves. Yes, Copics are expensive. Yes, they're non-archival. Neither are lots of fountain pen inks, and those can get crazy expensive per oz. Yes, Ohuhu and Arteza are cheap - but they're white label dropshippers. Generics. Low-quality by design. These companies haven't cracked the code for good products at a bargain. I started my Copic collection over a decade ago. I've tried like a dozen other brands in the meantime and I'll always return to Copic. It's not brand loyalty, it's loyalty to quality. They were the most was expensive, sure, but there's no shame in buying a handful of markers or refills and there. Saving for sales, birthdays, etc. Just like you would with anything else. Thanks for this video Ms. Amy. A lot of younger artists won't like your tone or message because it conflicts with the sparkly-eyed kitten gloves of YTers that only care about free PR and money. It's beyond refreshing to see someone with skills and experience speaking out on this. If anyone knows what they're talking about when it comes to what makes good markers, it's you. Also, you look great for your age!

    "You don't blame the YTer...you blame yourself." Oh no, I blame the person recommending. I actually like Ohuhu and can't tell the difference from Copic for what I'm doing. I may outgrow Ohuhu, if I stay with markers. For now they do what I want and get the results I hope for. Even so, I'm steering away from that paper. I've been using the expensive stuff. I really enjoyed your last 2 videos and honest opinion. You're so right that starting artists can get taken in and frustrated.

    I’d like to see your thoughts on the OLO brand. They have foam rubber brush tips like copic but are “customizable” meaning you can buy half markers (that hold 2ml of dye) and mix and match them with connector rings. I’m wondering how they hold up to copic. I’ve been thinking of trying them out as an addition to my copics, which I use for illustrations, and ohuhus, which I use for sketches. They haven’t been advertised or sponsored that much but have their own RUclips channel, and I’m wondering if it’s just another gimmick or if it will be another option for artists.

    There are only a couple art RUclipsrs I follow other than you - 1 is for her reviews on pencils and pens for coloring, the next a coloring book colorist, one a professional artist who reviews everything but it primarily a water-colorist, and finally a guy just because I love his personality and his comic book art. In my coloring books I use coloring pencils and will be honest I use everything from Crayola, to Brutfuner's 520, Primsacolor and Polychromos but I still ALWAYS use my Copics. The closest I've ever used to Copics was the original Spectrum Noir which they don't even make anymore and their current ones absolutely suck. Prismacolor isn't bad, but no refills and their nibs stink - same with W&N. When I'm doing art for family and friends for gifts - I always use the best; my Copic, Prisma and Poly on X-Press It or Arches if I'm not using markers. The Ohuhu paper barely even picks up pastel colors and just turns everything muddy looking which makes it look like the artist has issues not the crappy paper. Thank you so much for these vids Amy.

    All those Ohuhu product reviews being sponsored is very telling. Apparently even bigger channels have no interest in buying that stuff with their own money and reviewing them. They all only do it when they get it for free. I mean, Ohuhu has been around for a while now. And still most reviews start with "Ohuhu sent me these products to review them". Or: I knew about their products before but had no interest in them until they offered me free gifts and a potential sponsorship.

    You hit the nail on the head when you said these materials are basically what we would find in the bargain section of Target. That’s what really annoys me: these products are often cheaper than premium materials but they are overpriced for what they are. I bought an Arteza watercolor journal that was praised to the skies and its sizing was so bad, paint would suddenly splat out in spiderweb patterns, ruining my work. It was almost a relief when my Labrador ate it. I ended up buying a legacy brand journal, it was only a few dollars more and that paper had my back every time I used it. I love it and will never go back. I think some RUclipsrs believe they are doing a favor to their viewers by recommending cheap things but they are setting people up to fail. So-so or bad materials just are not a bargain and are a bigger waste of money than buying good quality the first time. If I buy four bad $15 journals to avoid buying a legacy brand for $25, where are the savings? I am sticking with tried and true brands. I am sure there are good newcomers but the misinformation is so prevalent that I am just not willing to risk more money or time or frustration. Thank you so much for tackling this important topic so professionally.

      I saw this same thing first hand when I started a watercolor class and gave permission for one student to use a very popular student grade option. She struggled so badly. Not every student was painting a framable masterpiece with their higher quality paint BUT the difference was that they were practicing their brush strokes and working on how to make smooth washes... meanwhile she struggled just to get the paint to the right consistency and then it wouldn't fully stick to the paper. Quality matters to professionals and serious hobbists because we like efficiency. But I think quality matters even more to beginners because learning is hard enough without fighting your art supplies.

    • @Oozaru85
      @Oozaru85 13 часов назад

      I use both student grade as well as artist grade watercolors. Im doing illustrations tho. As long as I use 100% cotton paper, the student grade paints do a pretty good job. I like using them in my sketchbooks. For serious art pieces I do prefer artist grade, tho. But yeah, for sketchbooks and brainstorming student grade paints are well suited. Wouldnt want to waste my expensive artist grade paints for that. @@AmyShulke

    Thanks for the insightful video. I've definitely seen the perplexing demonizing of Copics over the years despite the fact that it's simply been used in all sorts of professions for decades. Off topic, but related to marketing and glowing reviews, I bought into the bar shampoo and conditioner marketing campaign and overwhelmingly positive reviews last year. Within a few months of use, my hair was in the worst state it had ever been-dead, lifeless, no elasticity, dry, thinned, and yet it felt dirtier (and gunky!) than ever. Hair came out in chunks in the shower so I tried to wash my hair less, and yet the simple act of running a brush through my hair took off even more as my hair couldn't withstand the friction of even the gentlest swipe. I kept thinking maybe it was just my hair or that I was using it wrong. I was so sad for my hair and kept hoping it would eventually work out, but it never did. I left a critical review, and the morning after it was posted a representative had already contacted me to offer a refund for the price of the product. At that point, I didn't even care about the money anymore since it would not fix the damage it had done to my hair. Suffice it to say, marketing is very effective, and reviews are often bought or paid to change.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke 15 часов назад

      Your hair story is awful but it proves how conditioned (bad pun) we are to trust reviews nowadays. It's scary to think how often we're being lied to each day. Kinda ironic because reviews became popular because we thought they were more trustworthy than the commercials. Ugh. What a mess.

    As an artist I hear what you are saying. I do paper sculpture. Using sharp blades to cut my paper and various tools and techniques to get the dimensional effects is important. But the tools and the paper are the basis for good work. If I add color, I want my art supplies to be of excellent quality or it makes days of work look cheap and ugly (and it takes weeks to make one of my paper pieces). I do use markers for my doodle journals, and those markers are cheap ones solely for that purpose. When I’m ready to invest in nice alcohol markers I will make that investment like I have with my pastels, paints and pencils. Using quality papers suitable for the medium you are using is important for the quality of the outcome. I rant with you. ❤

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke 15 часов назад

      This is wonderful to read and you're right, I have no issues with a pro artist goofing around with silly supplies for doodles or even doing prelim sketches and comps. In these cases, it's the idea generation that counts, not the finished drawing. It's backwards for most of the Ohu-RUclipsrs I see. They're representing these journals and skechbooks as an end product, not a study. It's funny because I'm not a judgemental nanny kind of person. Most of the time, if you want to waste your money on something cheap, it's none of my business. But it becomes my business when I'm left to pick up the pieces when a student feels like they're incompetent and untalented... and the root cause is their awful art supplies. Thanks for sharing and I'm going to click over your name to see if I can see your work. (edit: darn, I was hoping you had a video of your sculptures!)

    The rendr paper you used still looks gray to me. It's not as gray as the other side, but it really doesn't look yellow. Your review rocks, though! I wanted to see if you had reviews for markers, but you apparently only use Copic markers. But what about people who are not professional artists; don't want to be; and can't afford high end markers like Copic? Even if you personally don't like any other brand of markers, couldn't you recommend the best of the worst for hobbyists like myself? If your channel is geared more towards professional and/or serious amateur artists, I completely understand. It's not a big deal. But it doesn't hurt to ask. 😊

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke 16 часов назад

      For the Rendr vs OBP test, the point is the level of grayness. I can handle grayish but we're all coloring blind when the paper turns C5 when wet. Ohuhu turns a ridiculous level of gray. As for the other brands of markers... I'm not sponsored by any art supply companies and I do not accept free gifts or samples in exchange for videos. So if you see something in my videos, I've purchased it with my own money. To be honest, I can't afford to test every cheap brand of marker out there. My most popular video hasn't even paid for itself yet. I use Copic because it works. I also firmly believe that even a small set of highly blendable Copics is better than 1000 cheap unblendable markers.

    • @lucychan7938
      @lucychan7938 3 часа назад

      The main complaints of Copic nowadays is mainly related to the dry out issue of copic sketch markers in recent years but the ink of copic is still the best. I would suggest to buy some copic inks that you frequently use and buy some blank Finecolour markers fill with copic ink. I've tested that with a re-wet copic marker that have drying issue and a blank finecolour fill with same ink, the faulted copic dried in 2 week but the finecolour still flow well. Even you cannot afford copic, there are actually a lot of Cheap markers that cost less than Ohuhu and perform similar or even better than ohuhu. The Finecolour that I've mentioned is one of the copic alternatives before Ohuhu's videos spreading everywhere, and there are brands like Blick's and Artfinity that have refills and sold by reliable retailers. If you only need lot of colours in lower price, not work with lot of blending and don't need refills, you can find a bunch of Touch knock-offs that's much cheaper than Ohuhu and similar qualities from Temu, eBay and Aliexpress. (But actually you are able to find full-colour Touch knock-off refills and much cheaper than the refills offered by Ohuhu)

      I think that bringing the newbies into it do not make your points any more or less valid. I think you are a wealth of knowledge! This was the first video of yours I came across and it made me feel a little uncomfortable, but that could be me projecting my own feelings, as I have been trying to not speak so harshly onto others. I have watched some of your other content since and noticed a difference in this video vs your other ones. Now I feel like this may just be a review you were passionate about. Like it was a product that you finally tried after social media kept pushing it so hard, just for it to not even be mid. I cannot fault anyone for that. Your stuff is great! Keep up the amazing work.

    I came into this video ready to hate you for throwing shade on a creator I like (who had been having a hard time creatively/mentally) but you definitely changed my mind. I'm glad I hemmed and hawed and missed the June sale for the paper and markers. Their video had me thinking the paper had a buttery smooth surface, so I'm glad to know I didn't waste a couple hundred dollars buying two mediocre pads of paper and a giant marker set that I really don't need (since I have probably 100+ markers combined of Spectrum Noir, Copic, and Blick Studio).

    I don’t understand the block people have against buying good marker paper. They don’t do this with other mediums. They’re perfectly willing to buy watercolor paper and they dont try to use oil paint on copy paper. Just buy good paper and quit being weird about it. I’ve actually seen a serious artist say that they weren’t going to “play copic’s game” by using “special” paper. I just don’t get it.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke 15 часов назад

      My theory is that markers are just the beginning. We're already seeing a flood of cheap gouache imports and I think watercolorists did get pretty hard by the student grade and crafty sets. These companies won't stop until they've trashed the definition of artist-grade in every medium. Sadly, they won't stop until we stop buying it.

      @AmyShulke I feel a _little_ bad for posting that. 😅 I don't use markers, though I'm interested in art processes no matter the medium. The only thing is, most marker artists I've seen on youtube are more - how do I put this without sounding like a snob? - journaller/crafter level. Which is fine, but not precisely what I'm interested in. Soon as I saw your tomato wedge in the thumbnail, I knew I had found the right place. I'm also the kind of person who looks at the 1-star reviews first, on Amazon. I'm sure the seller themselves will tell me what's _right_ with a product, I want to find out what's _wrong_ with it. So doubly appreciative, here.

    Thank you for your honest review. I learned alot about paper and it validated some of the issues I ran into. I got caught up in the hype and purchased this sketchbook. As someone who only does this as a hobby, it is scary to shell out tons of money for the big brands. That and I’ve read lots of reviews online that Rendr paper quality has gone down so this seemed like a safe alternative. I honestly thought I was crazy when I laid down my skin tone colors and they showed up as gray. 😭 It definitely doesn’t bleed through as advertised but that’s about it.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke 3 дня назад

      I totally understand. It is scary to invest in art supplies; no matter what medium you choose, the real stuff is always expensive. I think because markers got trendy and because we're not able to mix colors on a palette, it's probably more expensive to start markers than other art forms. Just know, when something cheap fails, it's not you. I've seen so many students improve just by putting a better marker in their hand and by working on better paper. Same techniques, same skills, just better supplies-- it makes a world of difference.

    To be honest, even Ohuhu is made in China, it's actually not popular among the Chinese art marker users. Copic is surely ranked the top among the Chinese marker artists but since the price is very high for them so many art students use other Chinese brands instead. Finecolour is the best local art marker brand among the local Chinese instead of Ohuhu. Ohuhu is really a over-hyped and heavily advertised Made in China product to me. And from your ohuhu test on your website, I somehow believe even some of the better Chinese marker brand like Finecolour and Croma behave better than Ohuhu though they are not comparable to copic. Moreover, in China it's easy to get these brands'refills in all colours around $1-1.5usd each but ohuhu cannot provide refills for each colours and sell them much more expensive than the local Chinese brands.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke 3 дня назад

      This is soooo interesting to read! It kinda confirms my suspicions... it feels like Ohuhu had an empty plastics plant and took advantage of a few US/China trade law holes... They figured they could make easy money here. Judging from all the Ohuhuites, they were totally right. If they ever intended to sell to the Chinese market, I don't think they would have invented the fake Hawaii story. That right there says they always intended to go after Americans.

    Thanks for the review! I tested this paper on a much simpler, more stylized piece and I liked it for that. Granted, I did not do as much blending as you did. I did notice the grayness when you put down a light color and that really threw me off, and made it difficult to know if I was getting the results I wanted.

      Thanks for confirming the gray factor. I think it helps when people read the comments to see that we're not just irrational haters. I love that you aren't sponsored, resulting in a real unbiased review. But shouldn't you at least try it out with Ohuhu markers? Maybe the composition of the ink in Copics differ from Ohuhu's marker, causing an issues on this kind of paper?

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke 4 дня назад

      I can test Ohuhus on their paper but I think you're misguided in assuming that Ohuhu markers were developed by artists and formulated by chemists. Ohuhu was a plastics company making knockoff camping supplies and electronics before they spotted another plastic product they could easily reproduce. They don't innovate anything, they imitate using the cheapest possible ingredients and they do this from an unregulated part of the world. So I was very serious when I said I was giving them an advantage by testing their paper with blendable markers.

    Ur not the only person in the world who hates this paper. I odered it a few days ago and I hated it too. The actual sheets are too thin, ink takes forever to dry. I used several different pigment liner brands on this paper, which I've been using with my alcohol markers on other papers multiple times. So, fineliners that are 100% alcohol marker proof. On this paper tho, they all smeared. I let them dry for 20 minutes and they still all smeared. I've never experienced anyting like it on my other marker papers. I returned it the other day. I'm just glad I ordered it from A-zon, not directly from Ohuhu. So, yeah. Never again. They had the chance to make a proper marker paper this time. Instead they released a bad Rendr knock-off.

    This comment isn't going to be completely on topic for the paper pad in the video, but as someone with a huge set of Ohuhu markers (the 200-and-however-many-it-is-I-don't-want-to-check set) who loves them, I wanted to thank you for giving your honest opinion on your website. As much as I love my markers, there are things that have bothered me about them for years, like the nonsensical names and the color-code system which you brought up in your review on the website. Recently I was really bothered when I saw a youtube video comparing Ohuhus to Copics that claimed Ohuhus were just as good as Copics for professional usage, without mentioning the fact that Ohuhus have abysmal lightfastness. Lightfastness is something that I don't worry about, as someone who uses my alcohol markers exclusively for fun, and I feel like it's an acceptable tradeoff for a lower price point, but it would be a massive issue for someone using them in professional avenues. Not mentioning it felt off. I'm also frustrated by the similarity of a good number of their colors. I went through once comparing swatches and testing colors, and counted all the markers I felt were close enough to another color that they were redundant, and I don't recall the number I came up with, but I was not happy about it. There shouldn't be five pinks that are nigh imperceptibly different in value. I've had some iffy feelings about the brand for a while now as prices rose, and the quality of some of their other products (specifically, some of their water markers, which is the only other supply they sell that I've tried) was less than quality. Your article made me realize, though, a lot that I've been missing. I've only ever used Ohuhus, never another brand of alcohol marker, but I had watched plenty of artists use Copics on youtube before I got my first set, and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with blending, and the colorless blender, and the like, because I wasn't getting the results and effects I felt like I should. Honestly, eventually I figured that it was a problem with the paper and I just wasn't able to figure out what kind of paper would work best, and then shrugged and learned to work around the issues (and I definitely adapted, finding a style and a process that works within the markers' limitations and lets me create pieces I love), but reading your article made the lightbulb turn on in my brain after however many years it's been. I don't totally agree that Ohuhus aren't worth spending any money on. The relative pricing means there was no way I would ever have been able to try alcohol markers if Ohuhus hadn't been around to try, and having the opportunity to work with even an inferior set made me fall totally in love with the medium that is now my favorite, hands down, so I can't regret the opportunity they gave me. In my opinion, a small set is good to try out the medium when you don't know whether or not you'll like it, enough to give someone a taste of what they can do. But if you really love alcohol markers, it seems like you should probably go for Copic. I wish I had the money to go out and buy some right now, because now that I'm aware of a little more of the differences I am very, very, very curious to try them out and see if the difference is as big as it sounds, but unfortunately I need things like food and gasoline that cut into my art-supply budget. I am apparently incapable of being concise but I will try to boil it down. Thank you for your honest review of the products, both the good and the bad. I appreciate it and I wish someone had really made the differences clear, sooner, so maybe I could have a few Copics by now, but ah well.

      This was great to read and I'm very glad you shared your experience and thoughts. I agree that we need a good entry-level set of markers for people to sample. Copic introduced the Ciao line to meet this need but then blew it on the pricing. Ciao were less expensive but still not an easy, affordable purchase. And I'm still looking for a marker brand that's easy to suggest to the fence sitters who are interested in markers but wisely hesitant. I would love to see a set of 24 versatile inexpensive colors that I could run a half dozen beginner classes with. Then if the student wanted to explore further, as each of the 24 dried out, they replaced it with a matching Copic. Seems like a simple dream but so far, no joy.

I swear, the list was a weird assortment and then it said "choose 20-30 of your liking". I was 18 and had no idea what I was even buying. Zero info. So I guess we never start off right. I'm very new to marker art, I've never seen bleed through paper before, and I honestly really like Ohuhu's for the monthish that I've had some stuff from them. I'm super happy to hear that Canson has their own, I'll have to try that out next time I have more sketchbook money. I totally understand your point and I bought the full Ohuhu set fully intending to recommend them as a starter marker before students upgraded to Copic. Unfortunately, the inks they use are soooo bad and the Ohuhu numbering system has people wasting hours swatching... even then, the colors that look like they should blend on the chart don't blend as they should... I could go on and on about this but I'm not sure you'll hear me if you're truly sold on Ohuhu. Anyway, Ohuhu gives alcohol markers a bad name and you don't realize it yet because you're new. Think of it like chocolate-- dollar store chocolate flavored Easter Bunnies are pretty tasty if you've never tried good chocolate. And once you try the good chocolate, it's hard to go back to the light brown hollow kid stuff.
